Christie’s Auction House will auction a painting by Winston Churchill in London on March 1, the only painting he painted during the Second World War. It is now owned by actress Angelina Jolie.
Churchill painted Tower of the Koutoubia Mosque in January 1943 in Marrakesh, after he, US President Roosevelt and later French President De Gaulle had discussed in Casablanca how the fight against Germany should be continued. The German troops in North Africa were all but defeated at that time.
After the conference, Churchill and Roosevelt traveled to Marrakesh, where Churchill painted his face of the Koutoubia Mosque. The Atlas Mountains can be seen in the background.
He gave the painting to Roosevelt as a souvenir. Roosevelt loved it:
