The Unified School District of Los Angeles prepares to generate several online class options, hoping to establish up to six virtual schools for approximately 15 thousand students who cannot enter schools because they are not vaccinated or they decide to get homeschooled.

The bill was approved Tuesday by the Board of Education, who recognize that the District of Los Angeles must prepare for a possible avalanche of unvaccinated students who will not be able to enter campuses in the fall of 2022 for not fulfilling the vaccination mandate.

According to recent data, 90 percent of Los Angeles Unified School District students are vaccinated against covid-19 or have obtained a medical exemption.

However, that vaccination rate means that about 20 thousand students are not vaccinated, because Los Angeles is the second largest school district in the United States.

For his part, school officials aim to open enrollment in March for virtual schools, while capturing data from unvaccinated students, to decide whether to open all six schools online.

Los Angeles Unified District chief of schools David Baca said the district surveyed families of students currently enrolled in the City of Angels independent study program, finding that 77 percent of more than 6,200 respondents wish to continue the next school year online.
