Angela Merkel warns at farewell: beware of anti-democratic tendencies

Christian Democracy called on the Germans to contradict conspiracy theorists. She is expected to be succeeded on Wednesday by the social democrat Olaf Scholz.

Solemn Farewell Ceremony

Merkel spoke at a solemn farewell ceremony in Berlin presented to her by the German armed forces, the Bundeswehr. This so-called Großer Zapfenstreich (Great Tattoo) is a traditional tribute to the departure of, among others, German chancellors, presidents and defense ministers.

Merkel urged to defend democracy against hatred, violence and disinformation. “Wherever scientific knowledge is denied and conspiracy theories and incendiary propaganda are spread, contradiction must get loud.” Wherever hatred and violence are seen as legitimate means of pursuing self-interest, “our tolerance as Democrats must find its limit,” she said in her possibly very last public address.

Nina Hagen

After her speech, an army orchestra played a song by singer Nina Hagen, who grew up in former communist East Germany, just like Merkel herself. The Chancellor had chosen the piece, as had two other songs.

Merkel was visibly moved. Due to corona, significantly fewer guests were able to participate in the Great Tattoo than usual. Those in attendance included President Steinmeier and future Chancellor Scholz. Merkel wished him and his government all the best and good luck and success.
