Angela Bassett on Austin Butler Still Sounds Like Elvis: “You Have to Say Goodbye to Him”

Angela Bassett understands Austin Butler’s plight as he answers questions about his voice after his Oscar-nominated role in Baz Luhrmann Elvis.

Bassett, dont Black Panther: Wakanda Forever role earned her a Best Supporting Actress nomination, sat down with Le new yorker for an interview posted online Monday. During the conversation, Bassett was asked if her Oscar-nominated role as Tina Turner in the 1993 biopic What’s love got to do with it took over his brain of how the role of Elvis Presley apparently impacted Butler.

The actress replied that she “absolutely” did, and she even gave a Turner-esque high-pitched laugh to prove it. “Tina’s laughter and the way she spoke took over,” Bassett said. “He took over, not as long as Elvis – maybe around four months later. You thus lived and breathed and began to see life through their perspective. You had to. They are part of you.

She continued, “I think that’s what’s going on with him. You have to say goodbye to it, and it’s hard to let it go, because you enjoyed it, you survived it, you delivered, and you’re proud of it. You had an opportunity and you hit it out of left field. So it takes a while to get back to normal. But you are different after this moment. Now you’re Austin, who did this great performance.

Butler sparked debate on social media during last month’s Golden Globes when viewers felt his acceptance speech appeared to be delivered in a voice similar to the one he used for the role. While speaking to reporters backstage after his win, Butler said: “I don’t think I always sound like him, but I guess I have to because I hear him a lot. »

On a recent visit to The Graham Norton Show, Butler felt that all of her singing for the film “kinda destroyed my voice.” The actor added that he felt embarrassed after finding out people questioned his voice.
