LISBON – The time when footballers played for passion and money came second for them is slowly becoming obsolete. Rarely, however, there are bright exceptions that bring a smile to the lips of the classics. Ángel Di María is a living example of this.
The Argentinian world champion joined Benfica Lisbon this summer, from where he left for Real Madrid in 2010 and returned to the Portuguese capital via Manchester United, Paris Saint-Germain and Juventus. And that it was not just any return, but a really special one.
The president of Benfica Lisbon, Rui Costa, spoke about his client. The words he let out are literally hard to believe. “Di María signed a contract a month before arriving at the Benfica stadium. When he learned that Benfica was interested in him, he didn’t want to hear anything else. Di María’s salary does not exceed the salary cap, he came without any signing bonus, his salary is not above a certain limit.” said the former favorite tribune at San Siro or Artemio Franchi in Florence.
“He didn’t want to know what his salary would be, he didn’t even ask a single euro. He told me he wanted to play for Benfica again and for any salary.” Costa revealed to B24PT.
If Costa’s words are true and he didn’t make anything up, then Di María’s act is truly admirable, respectable and exudes a true love for football as such. Benfica is in fourth place with nine points after four rounds. Their only loss was against Boavista Porto, Slovak representative Róbert Boženík scored two goals.
