Andy Warhol is one of the most influential figures in the Pop Art movement and has had a lasting impact on the art world of the 20th century. Born Andrew Warhola on August 6, 1928 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, he grew up in a family of Slovak immigrants. After graduating with a degree in commercial art from the Carnegie Institute of Technology, he moved to New York City in 1949, where he began a successful career as a commercial artist.
In the 1960s, Warhol turned to fine art and became a central representative of Pop Art. He used everyday objects and images from mass culture as motifs to blur the boundaries between high art and popular culture. His most famous works include: Campbell’s Soup Cansportraits of Marilyn Monroe and the Brillo Boxes. By using screen printing techniques, he was able to integrate the idea of mass production into his art while critically reflecting on consumer society.
In addition to his fine art, Warhol was also active as a filmmaker, publisher and music producer. His studio, known as “The Factory”became a meeting place for artists, musicians and intellectuals and played an important role in the New York cultural scene of the 1960s. Warhol’s influence spanned various media and he coined the term “15 Minutes of Fame”which describes the fleeting nature of celebrity in modern society.
