Andy Murray explains why beating Djokovic was his favorite win in Canada

Andy Murray revealed that beating Novak Djokovic in the 2015 National Bank Open final was his favorite Canadian Masters win. Murray, 35, is a three-time champion in Canada and has won the National Bank Open twice in Montreal and once in Toronto.

Murray won his first National Bank Open title in 2009 when he defeated Juan Martin del Potro in the Montreal final. The following year, when the National Bank Open was held in Toronto, Murray defended his title after beating Roger Federer in the final.

In 2015, Murray won his third National Bank Open title after beating Djokovic 6-4, 4-6, 6-3. Murray was asked to pick the favorite from his three wins in Canada. “It’s really difficult.

Probably the year I beat Novak here in the final. I had lost to him a number of times in a row in preparation for this fight. And it was an important match for me. It was also brutal heat that day,” Murray said, according to Sportskeeda.

“I think we played almost three hours for three sets but yeah that was a nice match.”

Murray on Djokovic and Rafael Nadal’s absence

Djokovic, Nadal and Roger Federer will not compete at this year’s National Bank Open.

Djokovic was denied entry to Canada because of his vaccination, while Nadal was forced out of the tournament with an abdominal injury. On the other hand, Federer didn’t play any tournaments in 2022 due to knee problems.

“Yeah, I mean that’s already happened in a couple of tournaments this year, if Rafa and Novak weren’t there the draws can open up and I would say that the group of players just below those two might not be as consistent with their results, so like I said, the draws can open up and there’s an opportunity for players to have a good run here,” Murray said. Murray was drawn to Taylor Fritz in the first round.
