A statement posted by the group on social media said: “We are shocked and saddened by the untimely death of our dear friend, family member and Andy Fletch Fletcher.”

Founded in Basildon in the late 1970s, the band has 14 studio albums in the top ten in the UK and international success with songs such as Enjoy The Silence, Personal Jesus and Just Can’t Get Enough.

The group’s statement also said: “Fletch had a real heart of gold and was always there for support, lively conversation, good laughter or cold beer.”

During his career he was best known by the pseudonym “Fletch”. Born in 1961 in Nottingham, he moved to Basildon, where he formed the band Composition Of Sound in the late 1970s with Martin Gore and Vince Clark. With the involvement of singer Dave Gahan, they changed their name to “Depeche Mode” and the quartet enjoyed many hits in the early 80’s.

Fletcher has appeared on all of Depeche Mode’s studio albums to date, including Songs Of Faith And Devotion in 1993 and Ultra in 1997, which peaked at number one on the UK album charts.

In 2020, the band was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
