Androidworld Beta Testing: Insights from Fanatical Testers

today, 9:35 PM | by Laura Jenny

Readers of Androidworld are quite fanatical about beta tests: 39 percent of readers even participate in these types of tests with their daily phone. 17 percent do this with Android betas and app betas, 1 percent with Android betas only and 21 percent with app betas. However, there is also a large portion that does not participate, has never participated and never wants to participate: 16 percent.

Fanatical testers

There aren’t many people who use a second phone for beta testing, just 2 percent. However, the people who have this almost all participate in tests of both the operating system and individual apps. Vallinny van Stijn is also a second phone user when it comes to tests: “I only participate if it has added value and then on a device that I rarely use.”

Which phone he uses is unknown, but @tukker is someone who tests fanatically: “Definitely, nice hobby. Except for Telegram, these are all apps that I don’t depend on. I use three Telegram versions, so if beta doesn’t work well, that’s no problem. 😂”

AW Poll

In addition to the 16 percent who do not participate and do not want to participate, there are three more no categories. 5 percent do not participate because he or she does not know how it works, 5 percent because they participated before and did not like it and less than 1 percent because his or her phone does not work. Drankorgel, for example, is not participating: “I’m not participating, I prefer to wait for a stable version where everything functions properly. Much more and much more thorough testing is needed. Better to have it a year later and working well than to have problems now that have to be solved with updates. Nowadays everything has to be done quickly and in a hurry, but that does not improve the quality.”

Green bananas

A large proportion of readers indicate ‘other’, namely as much as 35 percent. A comment that also struck us is that of T_Scheen, who responded to Drankorgel. T_Scheen: “In a hurry, that is now euphemistically called “agile”, where the customer is served green bananas, i.e. software that ripens at the customer🤔.” Green bananas, well said! That fits the green bot droid. We just have to hope that those bananas don’t become stock exchanges.

Thank you for your enthusiastic responses, next week there will be a new Q&A here on Androidworld, see you then!
