Android 15 Introduces Notification Cooldown Feature to Reduce Phone Alerts

We all have that one friend or group of friends who love to send out a flurry of messages whenever something exciting happens. While it’s great to be in the loop, it can quickly become overwhelming when your phone starts buzzing and dinging incessantly with notifications.

But fear not, Android 15 is here to save the day with its new Notification Cooldown feature. This handy toggle aims to lessen the impact of repeat notifications and prevent your phone from becoming a constant source of annoyance. No longer will you have to change your friends’ messaging habits, as Android 15 has got your back.

To access this feature, simply open the Settings app on your Android device and search for “Notification cooldown.” Alternatively, you can navigate to Settings > Notifications > Notification cooldown. From there, you can choose whether you want all notifications to have a cooldown or just those that Android deems to be part of a conversation.

The best part is that you don’t have to do anything to take advantage of Notification cooldown. Google has decided to enable it by default, at least in the Android 15 Developer Preview 1. So, you can sit back and let the feature work its magic without any additional effort on your part.

Here’s how it works: the first notification from a particular app will arrive at the normal volume. However, subsequent notifications from the same app will gradually become quieter. This subtle change in volume serves as a passive indicator that the new alert is part of an ongoing conversation rather than a separate request for your attention.

During our testing, we found that the second notification from a specific app was noticeably quieter, while the third and subsequent ones were only slightly lower in volume. However, if there’s a significant pause in the conversation (less than a minute), the volume will reset back to full.

While this feature is undoubtedly helpful for many users, there may be some who find it less beneficial. For example, if you need to be available at all times, you wouldn’t want potentially urgent notifications to become quieter and risk missing them. In such cases, you have the option to disable the feature altogether.

Android 15 is packed with exciting new features, and Notification Cooldown is just one of them. Stay tuned for more updates on the latest Android release and discover how it can enhance your smartphone experience.
