Andris Dlohi: Leading the Way in Wooden Building Structures in Latvia

Andris Dlohi heads the largest group of companies manufacturing, designing and building solid wood or CLT building structures in Latvia, which includes the companies “Cross timber systems”, “CLT Profi” and “Steel Profi”.

In a conversation with “Delfi Bizness”, he says that one of the current goals is to build the first wooden multi-storey building in Latvia with a height of at least six floors.

The company already implements such projects outside the borders of our country, it is everyday there, but there are still obstacles to overcome in our market.

Several times a week early in the morning Andris goes to crossfit for classes, because training gives energy for the whole day. He is also a member of the “Pa Saulei” choir.

On the other hand, holidays are dedicated to the big family, spending time together in various activities. “The most important thing in life is family. I can do crazy things because of it,” he says.

Every Sunday, we introduce readers to people active in business. You will find other “Personality in Business” talks here.

Tell the most important thing about yourself as a person in the Latvian business environment.

More than 12 years ago, in 2011, together with our partners, we came up with the idea of adding value to Latvia’s main export product – timber. In 2015, we started the production of CLT or Cross Laminated Timber panels in Jelgava. Currently, I manage the largest group of companies in Latvia for the production, design and construction of solid wood or CLT building structures.

At the “Cross Timber Systems” plant in Jelgava, we produce CLT construction raw materials, while the “CLT Profi” company deals with design, sales and assembly work in export markets – in the Netherlands, Belgium, Iceland and Scandinavian countries.

Also in the group is the “Steel Profi” company, which produces both metal parts and structures for our construction projects, as well as individual orders.

Every year we realize approximately 100 different construction projects, mainly outside the borders of Latvia. Basically, we build six- or eight-story residential, public and office buildings. Objects of this size are commonplace in export markets.

We are less recognizable in Latvia, because here similar wooden building construction projects can be counted only on the fingers of one hand, for example Ogres library, Salaspils kindergarten and the future multi-functional social service center of Valmiera.

What are the current events in your company and industry?

Currently, two opposite effects are observed in the construction industry.

On the one hand, there is pressure to use sustainable materials in building construction. In Europe and Scandinavian countries, wood is highly valued as a raw material for construction, so we are experiencing a rapid increase in demand.

On the other hand, there is uncertainty in the industry, many projects are on hold and the overall construction volume is falling due to high interest rates. Accordingly, it is necessary to balance and agree with cooperation partners in order to find the best solution for each object.
