Andris Bulis Interviews Director Jura Žagar on His Decision to Become Theater Director and Sacrificing His Acting Career

Actor Andris Bulis visits the director of Daile Theater and former actor Jura Žagar during the program “Iečeko slavenibu”. In the conversation, Žagar reveals why he decided to apply for the position of theater director and what he had to say goodbye to with this decision.

Asked if he had previously considered the idea of the director’s chair, Žagar answered: “You know, yes. I had such a thought. And the thought was – not that I would like to be a director, but I kind of see and understand what is wrong. And, for me it seems, it could be done that way, or it could be done this way. At no point did I want to knock someone down there or take someone’s place. No, I didn’t.”

Žagar mentions that he had a lot of work, first of all, already as an actor. “You have roles all the time, you play all the time. You have good roles, success, nominations. Plus, Žagarkalns is so sensitive – you still have to look after it. Plus the Cēsi concert hall. In a word, work up to your neck. Who needs it? “.

For Juri Žagar, becoming a director also meant sacrificing his acting career. “Yeah, that’s the hardest part.” Although people were confused as to why the two could not be combined, for Žagar it was a matter of principle:

I put them down as completely incompatible things. I refused all roles. I will not say that it is painless.

What Žagar has to say about living with the roles and the audience’s love, see in the episode:
