Until a few days ago Andrey Rublev had been in a terrible time, with a loss in the first round of competitions again. Now the Russian, suddenly, finds himself worthy of the final round of Masters 1000 for the fifth time in his career. In fact, in the semi-final of the Spanish tournament on clay, the world number eight defeated the American Taylor Fritz in two sets, 6-4 6-3 which does not allow any answers. In two months Rublev had won only one match, and the clay court season had started as badly as it could have: a bloody defeat in Monte Carlo, where he was the reigning champion, in the first round, the same in Barcelona.

Everything could be imagined, therefore, except that the Russian would have been the main person on the fields of the Caja Magica. Instead, little by little, Rublev found his tennis again, and won in the quarter-finals against Carlos Alcaraz, although the Spaniard was definitely not in good shape (as evidenced when he pulled out of the Rome Internationals), added impetus to him. Even against Fritz we saw glimpses of that Rublev who, when he is in shape and in the right mood, is a player who can (almost) hurt anyone. The semi-final in Madrid was the ninth match between the two, with Fritz leading 5-3. Overall, the first set was very even, with the Americans even trying to break Rublev in the first game, but the Russians responded with an immediate disappointment. There was no panic until it was 5-4 for the Muscovite, when the latter managed to take advantage of the opportunity at the first sight to break Fritz’s serve and take the set home. In the second set the decisive lead came at 3-2, with a break in Russia’s favor effectively closing the match. Tonight, from 8 pm, the other semi-final between Jiri Lehecka and Felix Auger Aliassime, who confirmed the separation from former coach Toni Nadal.
