British-American influencer Andrew Tate is no longer in jail, but is being placed under house arrest. Tate, controversial for his misogynistic views, was arrested by Romanian police on Wednesday. The homes of Tate and his brothers were also searched.
They are suspected of sex with minors, human trafficking, money laundering and witness tampering. It would be an addition to the already pending charges of rape and human trafficking, in which Tate and one of his brothers are still awaiting trial.
Tate was held for 24 hours after his arrest. Authorities wanted to keep him in custody for another 30 days, but the judge instead imposed house arrest. There he can access his X account and respond to the charges. As before, he denies all charges and speaks of a conspiracy against him and his brothers.
Extradition
Former kickboxer Tate, who has lived in Romania for years, was arrested in December 2022 and was also placed under house arrest. He was then allowed to await his trial in freedom.
The United Kingdom requested extradition this year. There is also a case of sexual violence against the influencer. Romania has agreed to that request, but Tate and his brother will not be extradited until after the trial in that country. It is still unclear when that will take place.
Misogyny
Andrew Tate rose to prominence when videos of him making misogynistic statements went viral on social media. Millions of people saw the videos in which he said, among other things, that he was a misogynist and that women were “men’s property.” He also said that “some of it is your own responsibility if you put yourself in a position to be raped.”
His accounts on Instagram, Facebook, TikTok and YouTube were blocked. He is still active on X, where he has 9.9 million followers. He became very popular among many men, partly because of his motivational videos about becoming successful, in which his idea of masculinity also plays a major role.
Andrew Tate was also one of the influencers who shared false information with his millions of followers on X before the far-right riots in Southport, UK against refugees and Muslims. He wrote that ‘an undocumented migrant, who had arrived in a boat’ had stabbed the three girls to death. He later admitted that he was wrong.
