Andrew Garfield talks about mother’s death with Sesame Street’s Elmo

Andrew Garfield (41) spoke to Elmo from Sesame Street about the loss of his mother. The two made the video for Sesame Workshop, the nonprofit organization responsible for children’s educational programs. Andrew’s mother Lynn died in 2019 from pancreatic cancer.

In the video, Andrew is asked how he is doing. “I’m thinking about my mother today,” the actor says. “She passed away not too long ago and you know, I just miss her so much.”

Andrew then explains that sometimes it is okay to miss someone, because it is also a ‘gift’. Elmo then says that he gets sad when he misses someone. “Me too, but in a way it’s nice to feel because it means you really loved someone when you miss them,” he says. “And when I miss someone, when I miss my mother, I remember all the hugs I got from her.”

The actor ends his conversation with Elmo with a little secret, which he whispers in the red Muppet’s ear: “Elmo was my mother’s favorite.”
