Andrejs Osokins: A Tribute to Ferenc Liszt – Concert Program and Performance

Ferenc Liszt’s fame in the Romantic era was comparable to the status of a rock star – he was adored and carried on his arms by the whole of Europe. Liszt was a cult pianist of the 19th century, the initiator of a new era of playing art, which drew impulses from the world, art and religion for its works.

Andrejs Osokins about the selected program: “This concert is conceived as a story about Ferenc Liszt, the evolution of his music and personality. In Liszt’s work, we encounter a development from lyrical, brilliant works to religious contemplation, which reveals to us the diversity of his personality and his rich life. During his lifetime, Liszt from a virtuoso stage character turned selfless benefactor who wants to pass on her knowledge to others and loves her composer friends by popularizing their music, so the program also includes arrangements of music by Franz Schubert, Richard Wagner, Robert Schumann by Liszt.

Like Liszt’s life, his work is permeated by the theme of wanderings, which is vividly revealed in the cycle Years of wandering. Hungarian folklore plays an important role in the composer’s music, which we can hear in Liszt’s Sixth Hungarian Rhapsody. The program also includes the music of his contemporary and rival, Frédéric Chopin, whom Liszt held in high esteem. Similar to Ferencs Liszt, the Latvian classicist Jāzeps Vītols also devoted a significant part of his life to pedagogy and was a music authority, founding a music academy in his homeland, and we will also hear Vītol’s piano miniatures at the concert.”

Pianist Andrejs Osokins is equally brilliant in concert programs dedicated to Western European classics, in chamber music, and in the works of contemporary authors. This year, Andrejs Osokins was awarded the Order of Three Stars in the rank of officer for his concert performance and charity actions in support of Ukraine. The globally sought-after Latvian pianist regularly performs in legendary European concert halls – the Berlin Philharmonic, Berlin Concert HallMilan Verdi in the hall Royal Festival Hall and Wigmore Hall in London, Gasteig in the concert hall in Munich, The Mint in the concert hall in Brussels, Opera Comical hall in Paris and others.
