A personal conversation between the director and the former minister took place in 2014. According to Zvyagintsev, after watching Leviathan, Medinsky noted that in the director’s paintings “completely black and black” and urged to film about the bright sides of life. Zvyagintsev replied that he does not create reality, but only watches what is happening in the country and reflects it in the movies. He also noted that he would start making films about the bright sides of life when the living conditions of a person and his prospects change in Russia. “Then he [Мединский] issued somersault: “Wait, you want to say that we are creating this?” I said, “of course you are,” said the director.
Medinsky also said that in Russia “they don’t drink like that”, as in Zvyagintsev’s films. The director replied that, apparently, the politician lives “in another Russia.”
In September last year, it became known that Zvyagintsev began preparations for the filming of a new film. It was noted that this will be a drama about a wealthy middle-aged man who has a successful career, money, family and a house on the shores of the Mediterranean Sea. It is planned that the shooting of the tape will begin in the spring of 2020, and it will be released in 2021.
The last film of Zvyagintsev “Dislike” was released in 2017 and got jury prize of the 70th Cannes Film Festival. For the director, this award was the third at the festival. In 2011, he won the main prize in the category “Special Look” for the tape “Elena”, and in 2014, his painting “Leviathan” was awarded the prize “For the best screenplay”.
