For Bianca Andreescu there was a negative premiere at the US Open on Tuesday. The number six seeded Canadian had to admit defeat to Maria Sakkari (GRE / 17) 7: 6 (7/2) 6: 7 (6/8) 3: 6 and thus lost a game in the main competition of the US Open for the first time.
Two years ago she won the title at her New York premiere, last season she was absent due to a knee injury.
The game, in which Andreescu was plagued by cramps at the end, ended after 3:30 hours of play at 2.13 a.m. local time, making a women’s match at the US Open as late as ever before. Sakkari is now facing Karolina Pliskova (CZE / 4).
Bencic continues without losing a set
Olympic champion Belinda Bencic is also in the quarter-finals. The 24-year-old Swiss defeated former French Open winner Iga Swiatek from Poland after a gripping tiebreak in the first set with 7: 6 (14/12) 6: 3.
The world number twelve Bencic passed the first endurance test this year in Flushing Meadows against the number eight in the world with flying colors and is still without a set loss in the fourth and last Grand Slam tournament of the season.
In the quarter-finals, Bencic will meet the 18-year-old British Emma Raducanu. The number 150 in the WTA ranking prolonged their sensational run with a smooth 6: 2 6: 1 win over Shelby Rogers. The American had defeated the Australian world number one Ashleigh Barty in the third round.
