Mönchengladbach. As the Ministry of Schools and Education announced yesterday, NRW is receiving further funds from the federal government to expand the open all-day. On December 28, 2020, the federal government had entered into force the “Federal financial aid for the investment program to accelerate the infrastructure expansion of all-day care for primary school children”. In addition to the funds from the federal government, the state and municipalities each contribute half of their own contribution of 67.8 million euros. The funds can be used immediately for investments in the qualitative and quantitative expansion of all-day education and care offers for primary school children.

The city of Mönchengladbach is also benefiting from the new funds for the open day: “Mönchengladbach will receive around 3 million euros from federal funds with a city contribution of 15 percent. This gives us the chance to further reduce the excess demand for OGS places, ”said Nicole Finger, leader of the Free Democrats in Mönchengladbach.

“At the moment we cannot meet the demand of over 900 children. With the measures already financed in the double budget, we are creating 450 new places. We have to use these additional funds to take even more pressure off this quickly. This is more necessary than ever due to the learning deficits that arose in the Corona situation. “

The federal funding provides for an own contribution of 30 percent of the funding amount, half of which is paid by the state and municipalities. Eligible for funding are public schools and approved substitute schools.

“The state of North Rhine-Westphalia is strengthening all-day schooling and attaches particular importance to the quality of the offer. The funds have been increased by 110 million euros since 2017. The new federal funds are a great additional impetus for our municipalities to continue to invest more heavily in all-day work. The open full day makes an indispensable contribution to the compatibility of family and professional life, ”says Andreas Terhaag, district chairman of the Mönchengladbach FDP and member of the state parliament of North Rhine-Westphalia.

Around 94 percent of the schools in North Rhine-Westphalia are open all-day schools and the offer is continuously being expanded. The funds have been increased by the NRW coalition since 2017 from 454 to 602 million euros, which means that compared to 2017, 47,000 new all-day places can be financed.
