In 1990, Andreas Brehme became a national hero in Germany after deciding the World Cup final against Argentina with the game’s only penalty goal. The left-footed full-back is perhaps best remembered for taking the penalty kick with the “wrong” foot.
The golden hero also had a successful career at club team level and represented, among others, Bayern Munich, Inter, Real Zaragoza, Saarbrücken and Kaiserslautern. The merit list includes league titles with both Bayern and Inter.
But now German football is in mourning.
According to the newspaper Bild, Andreas Brehme died during the night of Tuesday from a probable cardiac arrest. The World Cup hero turned 63.
Bayern Munich mourns:
“FC Bayern is extremely saddened by the sudden death of Andreas Brehme. We express our deepest sympathies to his family and close friends,” the club writes on X.
“Andreas Brehme will forever be in our hearts, as a world champion but more importantly as a very special person. He will always be part of the FC Bayern family. Rest in peace, dear ‘Andi'”.
At the beginning of the year, Brehme was deeply affected after close friend Franz Beckenbauer passed away.
In total, there were 86 international matches for “Die Mannschaft” for the former left-back. In addition to the gold in 1990, Brehme also has a WC and EC silver on the merit list.
