Andrea Capone, former footballer found dead in a hotel in Cagliari – Football

Andrea Capone43 years old, former Cagliari player, was found dead this morning with a head wound inside a hotel in the center of Cagliari.

Perhaps a fatal fall

According to an initial reconstruction, Capone accidentally fell and hit his head. Even from an initial external examination of the body by the medical examiner’s staff it appears that the injuries are compatible with a fall. The former player had attended a baptism party last night and stayed in the five-star Palazzo Tirso hotel, apparently because he couldn’t find the car keys. Here Capone spent the night in a two-story suite where he was found dead this morning. The case is in the hands of the police flying squad but the flying squad and the forensic team also intervened on site. An autopsy will almost certainly also be carried out. Raised in the rossoblù youth teams, Capone wore, in addition to that of Cagliari, also the shirts of Sora, Treviso, Vicenza, Grosseto and Salernitana. He also played for the Italian Under-20 national team in 2001.

Cagliari’s condolences

“All of Cagliari Calcio learns with dismay and profound sadness the news of the passing of Andrea Capone, who died at just 43 years old” writes the Sardinian club on its website, retracing the stages of Capone’s career. “From Cagliari, he arrived at a very young age to wear the rossoblù shirt, first in the youth team and then fulfilling his dream of playing as a protagonist in the first team at the highest levels. Born on 8 January 1981, a crystalline talent, he immediately made people talk about himself for his undoubted qualities : in the Primavera he formed with David Suazo a pair full of technique, speed and goals which would then also be found in the first team. His debut among the professionals – the club recalls – came at the age of 19 on the first day of the 2000-2001 season, in Serie. B, during the Cagliari-Crotone match won 4-0, on 3 September 2000. It will be a season of 12 appearances and one goal, on 8 April 2001 in the 3-1 win in Cosenza. He will wear the rossoblù until 2006, with in between the loans to Sora and Treviso: in the 2003-2004 season, the one of the return to Serie A with Gianfranco Zola as captain, he will contribute with 2 goals (against Pescara and Fiorentina) in 22 matches. They will be the 2005-2006 years 2006-2007 to consecrate him in Serie A: on 28 August 2005 his debut in the top flight in Siena, on 21 September his first goal in Empoli. In total he made 123 appearances for the rossoblù, 12 goals and 7 assists, before continuing his career in Vicenza, Grosseto and finally Salerno. The bond with his land will remain impossible to scratch, for a boy who has always been known for professionalism, dedication and passion. Qualities that will remain in the hearts of those who were lucky enough to know him and meet him on and off the pitch. Cagliari Calcio is close to the family in this moment of great pain. Rest in peace, Andrea”, concludes the message.
