Months after his resignation as president of the Turin JuventusAndrea Agnelli has reappeared with an interview with The Telegraph in which he has charged against UEFA and has once again insisted that the Super League is still alive. The Italian leader has had harsh words for the continental body.
“UEFA rules everything and owns nothing. The Premier League’s gap with respect to other championships is growing and is becoming insurmountable. The Super League is necessary because if football continues to be so predictable people will move away of the stadiums more and more. The current system leaves historical teams with no option, many of them such as Anderlecht, Celtic, Benfica, Panathinaikos or Red Star Belgrade, to name just a few examples. There have been dramatic cases: Ajax proclaimed champion of the Netherlands in 2019, won the Dutch Cup and Super Cup and played in the semifinals of the Champions League. Two months later, the club could have been eliminated in the preliminary round of the new Champions League “says the leader.
He has also charged against Ceferin and Infantino: “In 2019 we were ready to take the plunge. Ceferin and I went hand in hand. But an internal revolution began in the big leagues and also in the main federations and Ceferin backed down. Why are the presidents of UEFA and FIFA re-elected over and over again without new candidates appearing? Ceferin and Infantino will go as far as they can to stay in power and preserve their privileges. Even so, if Ceferin calls me, I would pick up the phone. He is my daughter’s godfather.”.
