André Ventura will present the resignation of leader of the Chega party and will have already revealed that intention to those closest to him in the party structure, the Observer found out. The official communication to the militants should be made next week. The deputy also said that he will call elections for the leadership in September.
According to a source from Chega, close to André Ventura, the criticisms – which had already begun to make themselves heard in recent months – have worsened with the deputy’s decision to abstain from voting on the presidential decree for the renewal of the state of emergency. This after having voted in favor of this exceptionality regime on 18 March.
“Chega was the first party to defend the declaration of a state of emergency to respond to the Covid-19 outbreak. For this reason, part of the party felt that he was uncompromising when he opted to abstain just because he had reservations about the idea of releasing prisoners, ”explains the party’s source.
Critical voices were not sensitive to the arguments of the single deputy in the parliamentary debate: “Chega understands that a state of emergency should be to control a pandemic and not to generate pandemonium in our cities and our lands”. The Observer knows that since Thursday “messages and phone calls rained down with criticism and accusations”, which would have precipitated the decision to knock on André Ventura’s door. In September, but still with no date set, the National Council will meet and “clarify what leadership Chega wants”.
It is not the first time that news of a bad internal environment has appeared in the Chega party. In message via WhatsApp to which the magazine Olá had access, sent to the district on February 24, André Ventura said: “I’m tired of this. I walk around the country explaining to people that we are different, sometimes with hours of travel and minutes of sleep, and what I hear, miles away, is: have you seen what is written on this page of Chega? And on this page of this leader? If this atmosphere remains in the party, I resign before the summer. I’m not for this! ”
