– It is a great shame that this one slipped, says Øvredal to VG.
Although “The Long Walk” missed Øvredal already back in 2020, before the Norwegian made the Dracula film “The Last Voyage of Demeter”, it is only now that the news has become known.
Opposite the entertainment magazine Collider he goes even further.
– It is one of the biggest disappointments in my life not being able to make “The Long Walk”.
The “Troll Hunter” director, who was recently in theaters with the Dracula film “The Last Voyage of Demeter”, was hired to direct “The Long Walk” for the production company New Line Cinema back in 2019.
– It was partly the corona pandemic that knocked the air out of the project, in addition to the fact that there have been a lot of changes internally at Warner Bros, he elaborates to VG.
New Line Cinema is owned by Warner Bros. Discovery.

– Biggest loss in his career
In the podcast “Post Mortem with Mick Garris”, Øvredal says that he was ready with his suitcase to go to California to start work on “The Long Walk”, when the news came that the borders to the USA would close.
– Then I had to call New Line and say I couldn’t go, in danger of being trapped in the states without my family.
At that time, Øvredal had been sitting for months with the playmobil toy to find different camera angles, and figure out how to shoot the film.
– I just imagined how to make it. So far this is my biggest loss in my career. It would be great for me to be a part of Stephen King’s universe. I’m a big fan, says Øvredal in the podcast.

Tribute to Stephen King
Stephen King himself has previously applauded Øvredal’s “The Last Voyage of Demeter” and has Twitter/X described it as jaw-droppingly good entertainment.
The American horror and thriller king Stephen King wrote the novel “The Long Walk” as far back as 1979, under the pseudonym Richard Bachman.
The plot takes place in the future and revolves around an annual competition, where 100 teenage boys compete in a walking competition. The rules state that the boys must maintain a pace of over six kilometers per hour. If they break this, they only get three warnings before they are shot.
– The film is in completely new hands, I think. Across the board, says Øvredal.
Even if “The Long Walk” is out of the picture, Øvredal will not be unemployed anytime soon. The Norwegian will direct “Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark 2”. Øvredal was also the helmsman on the lead film from 2019.
