Andre Lotterer has announced that he will withdraw from Formula E at the end of the 2022/23 season, where he competed with Andretti Autosport. He announced on social media that he will also step back from single-seater racing and will now focus solely on his work with Porsche in the 2024 World Endurance Championship. Lotterer has competed in Formula E for six seasons since joining Techeeta in the 2017/18 season, marking the end of more than 20 years of single-seater racing.
During this time, Lotterer won the Formula Nippon title in 2011 and made his F1 debut for Caterham in 2014 at the Belgian Grand Prix at Spa-Francorchamps. “The time has come to end 26 years of single-seater racing,” Lotterer wrote in a statement. “I have decided to no longer participate in the FIA Formula E World Championship in order to concentrate on my fourth Le Mans 24 Hours victory and the challenge with Porsche to conquer the FIA World Endurance Championship.”Formula BMW, Formula・Racing with Renault, Formula 3, Champ Car, Formula Nippon/Super Formula, Formula 1, and finally the Formula E family, which we joined at the start of Season 4 in 2017, has been great.” “We created Formula E. I would like to personally thank[series co-founder]Alejandro Agag, his team and the FIA for giving me this opportunity. Formula E was the most challenging and fun championship I have ever competed in!” I’m grateful and proud to have been able to race in Formula E, to promote sustainable technology, and to have met some amazing people in this paddock, some of whom are now some of my best friends. “I would like to thank everyone who helped me take part in this innovative and exciting championship. Leo Thomas, Julian and Alexander Jacobi, JEV and the TECHEETAH team! What a great experience together! It was great!” The news of Lotterer’s departure from Formula E follows a difficult season in which he finished 18th in the championship, his best finish being fourth at the season opener in Mexico City. Lotterer last scored points in the first race in Berlin, finishing eighth. His struggles were further highlighted by teammate Jake Dennis, who had 11 podiums, including two wins, on his way to the title. Lotterer, who competed in Techeeta for two seasons, joined the Porsche Formula E works team from the 2019/20 season and moved to customer team Andretti for the 2022/23 season. He has been able to balance that with a full WEC season with Porsche. Already in June, he was forced to miss the Jakarta E-Prix as it coincided with the Le Mans test day, and David Beckmann took his place. In his six seasons in Formula E, Lotterer achieved seven second-place podiums, but never won. Lotterer’s best finish in the championship was eighth, having finished eighth in each of his first three seasons. Andretti has yet to announce Lotterer’s replacement for the 2023/24 season.
