Andre Drummond explains his secret to grabbing more rebounds

Replacing Joel Embiid at the Sixers, Andre Drummond is no longer a starter in the NBA but remains a real rebound vacuum. The double All-Star (2016 and 2018) revealed the secret of his domination under the panels. Spoiler, it’s not very glorious…

“I’m the best rebounder in history.”

Almost every year, Andre Drummond puts this big take back on the table. With 12.4 rebounds on average over his career, a peak of 16 per game in 2017-18 and four titles as best NBA rebounder, the 2m11 pivot has some arguments to make. Even at 31 years old and in a limited role with the Sixers, Drummond is capable of grabbing a good twenty, as was the case last night against the Magic (20 rebounds in 26 minutes).

However, to arrive at these very impressive averages/totals, the former Pistons pivot has a less than stellar method. On the podcast Run Your RaceAndre Drummond admitted that he sometimes intentionally misses his shots to boost his rebounding stats. This was particularly the case in his great years with the Pistons, when he chained games with 20 points – 20 rebounds.

Between 2013 and 2019, Andre Drummond averaged more than 5 offensive rebounds for the Pistons, climbing to 5.4 on two occasions. Only Dennis Rodman, Charles Barkley, Jayson Williams and Moses Malone – master of the discipline – have done better in history. Malone still holds the record with 7.2 offensive catches during the 1978-79 season! Not for nothing was he nicknamed the “President of Rebounds”.

Fun fact: like Drummond, it happened that Moses deliberately missed shots to take the offensive rebound and score just behind, sometimes more easily because Malone went back to the hoop more quickly than his opponents. Andre was therefore inspired by the greatest!
