Andi Coulter, assistant professor of business governance at Washington and Lee University, has released a compelling biography on the iconic San Francisco-based post-punk band AFI. Published by J-Card Press, an independent publisher specializing in biographies of alternative, indie rock, and hip-hop groups, the book titled AFI delves into the band’s three-decade journey, exploring their formation, cultural significance, and enduring influence.
Coulter’s work examines AFI’s unique ability to evolve musically while retaining their dedicated fan base—a testament to their DIY ethos. The book also highlights the band’s role in shaping online fan culture, a phenomenon that has become a cornerstone of modern music fandom.
“I sold my book to an independent publisher that was just starting their business,” Coulter shared. “As a former music marketer, I wanted to market myself for an upstart rather than going with the institutionally large publishing company. At W&L, I teach a class on rogue marketing in the arts, and I felt it was time to put my money where my mouth was, testing out my own tactics.”
The biography has garnered critical acclaim, including a glowing review from international magazine of cultural criticism and analysis. It also became a No. 1 bestseller in music books on Amazon, solidifying its place as a must-read for fans and music historians alike.
Coulter, now in her fourth year at washington and Lee University, brings a wealth of experience to her work. Before joining academia, she spent 15 years in the music marketing industry and authored a book on the New York underground band Suicide as part of the 33 1/3 music book series. Her academic background includes a Bachelor of Arts in history from the University of Virginia,a Master of Arts in English from the University of Toledo, and a Ph.D. in English and musicology from the State University of New York at Buffalo.
In March, Coulter will kick off her East Coast book tour in Washington, D.C., offering fans and readers an opportunity to engage with her insights on AFI’s legacy.
