The Congressional Andean Peoples Commission approved the opinion of the bill that aims to repeal the modifications that were made to the Forestry Law in December 2023.

The initiative was approved by 10 votes in favor, none against and four abstentions. The opinion was supported by Congressmen Ruth Luque, Maria Taipe, Juan Burgos, Isaac Mita, Karol Paredes, Susel Paredes, Digna Calle, Silvana Robles, Elvis Vergara and Pasion Davila; and Nilza Chacon, Nelcy Heidinger, Merly Infantes and Jeny Lopez abstained.

The new Forest Law was questioned because it authorized farmers to continue operating in territories that had already been deforested, a fact that aroused criticism from sectors that considered that it encouraged the depredation of the Amazon.

However, the opinion indicates that the modifications represented non-compliance with prior consultation, impunity for forestry crimes, and also points out that they put indigenous peoples at risk.

The opinion must be submitted to the Plenary Session of Congress so that in a next session, it can be ratified or sent to the archive.
