Andalusia leads an international research project that addresses the health and emotional well-being of men

SEVILLA, 30 (EUROPA PRESS)

The Pablo de Olavide University (UPO) leads the Imgruse-H project, with the aim of evaluating the effectiveness of the GRUSE groups with men, a health promotion program of the Ministry of Health and Consumption, which is carried out in centers primary care of the Andalusian Health Service (SAS).

The Gruse program, promoted by the Ministry through the General Directorate of Public Health and Pharmaceutical Regulation, offers, through group work, tools to face the difficulties of daily life, from a positive vision of health and from the perspective of gender, addressing the influence of the canons of masculinity on health and emotional well-being. The experience began in 2011 with groups of women, and in 2016 it was extended to groups of men, after analyzing the impact of the economic crisis on the mental health of this population group.

As indicated in the press release, this project continues the evaluation of the Gruse with Women that the research team carried out previously and in which evidence of the effectiveness of the strategy was collected. It is now a matter of analyzing the impact of the intervention on men.

The project has been accepted for financing in the latest Call for Projects of Excellence, within the scope of the Andalusian Plan for Research, Development and Innovation (Paidi) of the Junta de Andalucía, in the form of challenges for society.

With this research, the work team hopes to demonstrate that group intervention with men has a positive effect on personal assets for health and improves the perception of their quality of life and well-being. For this, a longitudinal investigation with mixed methodology and three years duration is proposed.

The quantitative study has a pre-post quasi-experimental design, with an experimental group and a control group. For the qualitative study, focus groups will be carried out with healthcare professionals, as well as semi-structured interviews with participants in the Gruse. The triangulation of qualitative and quantitative results will make it possible to verify the scope of the intervention.

The project is international in nature and includes, in addition to the Pablo de Olavide University, other Andalusian universities such as the University of Cádiz and the University of Huelva and American universities such as the Global Center for Applied Health Research of the Arizona State University (USA), the Center for Interdisciplinary Research in Sciences and Humanities of the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) and the University of Concepción in Chile.

In addition, it has the participation of the Andalusian Health Service, integrating into the team two professionals from the coordinating group of the strategy and counting on the collaboration of health social work professionals who are going to develop the groups.

The research team is coordinated by the UPO professor, Antonio Iez Domnguez, from the Department of Social Work and Social Services.
