The sabioteña Patricia Rus has already been operated on for breast cancer after publicly denouncing that the surgery was postponed due to the coronavirus
Patricia Rus Torrejon (Sabiote, 1993) does not smile again, because she always maintained joy, even when she said ‘enough’ on social networks: the breast cancer sabioteña who was diagnosed on March 6, on the threshold of the lockdown. The operation should have been undertaken when the chemotherapy sessions ended on September 2. October passed, November passed and nothing. Until the surgery took place on December 2 at the San Juan de la Cruz hospital and everything has gone according to plan.
“I am very grateful to the director of the hospital. He learned about my case and they immediately prepared everything,” he sums up. The impact of Rus’ story jumped from his social media accounts – where he generated thousands of reproductions from a testimony that mixed anger and despair – to the media of the province and the country. “I will not die with 27 years of cancer because of the pandemic,” he said in the viral clip.
The first words that the surgeon who intervened on Rus dedicated her to Rus were forceful: “You could already have surgery.” Indeed, Rus Torrejón was examined in Úbeda in August. I wanted to rush the options before the entire armpit emptying, as has happened. “I wanted a second opinion because of my age and the type of tumor to avoid removal,” he explains.
In light of the Rus protest video, more patients with pending surgeries have publicly denounced delays to surgery. “I was also surprised by the operation on my partner Luisa, who is also from Jaen,” he reveals. “Anyway, it is not fair to get to this point. Public health must always be there,” he adds.
The future of the sabioteña is through rehabilitation and radiotherapy. It remains to be seen how the right arm looks. They have already told her that it is practically impossible for her to be a hairdresser again. When he recovers, when the time comes, he will look for work. Insurance. “Something will have to be done, because I know how to stand. They tell me to stay at home and I can’t,” he says.
