And now the tiger mosquito

As announced for several years by specialists, the tiger mosquito continues to colonize French territory. The Vigilance-Moustiques website has just published its 2020 map of the presence of tiger mosquitoes in France (see below). And the mapping is hardly in doubt about the progression of this insect which can carry serious diseases. 6 new departments are placed this year on red alert, henceforth 57 departments in total, including Corrèze, where the presence of the tiger mosquito is proven for at least two years, hence this red vigilance which means that the insect is officially “established and active”.

It is normal that Corrèze is the first department affected in Limousin, since the progression of the tiger mosquito is done from the South of France. What is less normal, however, is that Haute-Vienne and Creuse are only yellow vigilance (simple entomological watch), while practically all the departments around are in red!

Would the tiger mosquito stop at the borders of the departments?

Would the tiger mosquito stop at the borders of the departments? No, replies laughing Stéphane Robert, the President of the Vigilance-Moustiques site. “_It may not have been reported yet_, he may not have had enough vigilance from the citizens in these departments, so he may be there, but we don’t know“, he explains to France Bleu Limousin.

The presence of the tiger mosquito, recognizable by its white and black stripes, is indeed often detected by individuals, before being checked by the health authorities, who then implement procedures to limit its reproduction. It is therefore important to give the alert in case of doubt, because this mosquito potentially carries serious diseases such as chikungunya, dengue and the Zika virus. Finally, the sooner it is detected, the faster its reproduction can be stopped. “It is one of the most invasive species in the world“, adds Stéphane Robert, deeming its development” inevitable “.

This little insect develops in particular in “stagnant waters”, even in small quantities, in courtyards, gardens or balconies. It is particularly active around the month of May, but this year it already went into action around mid-April, thanks to a fairly mild winter and a fairly warm first part of spring.

> To report the possible presence of the tiger mosquito, there is therefore the site of mosquito alert, but also the site ofHandles.
