And now the embarrassing politicians

By Luís Alonso Colmenares Rodríguez

Political hypocrites seem to multiply like plagues of cockroaches in the dark underworld of corruption. Those congressmen who once promised change and renewal are now showing their true colors, revealing their lack of convictions and disregard for the welfare of the people. And his dirtiest game takes place in La Guajira, a land that has been the victim of neglect and looting for more than three decades. In La Guajira we have everything and we need everything because everything has been stolen!

What happened to the pact they offered us? Where was the long-awaited change? What I am observing is that they blatantly lied to us and now we find ourselves in a vicious circle, where the same corrupt people will be able to continue ruling at ease, as if the systematic theft of La Guajira’s resources were part of their hereditary patrimony.

The incoherence of the convictions in politics has its greatest expression in the support for the candidates for the governorship of La Guajira by the congressmen who were elected with the discourse of change and now prefer things to remain the same, now they prefer that the The same ones that have been stolen from La Guajira for more than 30 years.

Is that the pact? Is that the change?

It is outrageous to see how these shameful politicians, disguised as champions of justice, undo their promises once they come to power. What cynicism! They sold us an illusion, a hope for transformation, which began with the electoral results of the first and second presidential rounds like never before in an election in the department, and instead of that, we are seeing more of the same.

La Guajira continues mired in abandonment, misery and lack of opportunities. There is nothing that inflames my anger more than the fact that these political knaves show no interest in the welfare of the people. Don’t you care that, according to the DNP, more than 4 trillion pesos in royalties have been transferred between 2012 and 2023? Where is the fruit of those millionaire sums? It is not reflected in the solution to the basic problems that afflict the people of La Guajira, such as access to drinking water, adequate medical attention, quality education, decent employment or communication routes.

Instead, the only thing that appears on the horizon are empty works, mere facades to cover up the reality of an abandoned town. Gleaming parks, impeccable synthetic courts, skating rinks and sumptuous swimming pools are just a smoke screen to hide the negligence and lack of commitment of those who fill their mouths with grandiose speeches, but in reality only seek to maintain their privileges and line their pockets. .

How is it possible that people are still falling for these phonies? Could it be that collective memory is so fragile? Or are we, the citizens, the silent accomplices of this farce?

We cannot continue to allow ourselves to be deceived over and over again. It is time to wake up, to open our eyes and to demand responsibility from those who claim to represent us.

La Guajira deserves authentic leaders, committed to their people and willing to fight for their development. It is time to put an end to the era of the traitors and the corrupt. It is time to build a future in which politics is a true instrument of change and social welfare. We cannot allow La Guajira to continue being a victim of those who only seek to fill their coffers at the expense of the misery of its people.

The incoherence of convictions in politics is a disease that corrodes our institutions and bleeds the hope of a better future. But it is up to us, the citizens, to stop this plague of hypocrisy and demand clear accounts from those who represent us. We cannot let our votes be trampled on by greed and indifference. It is time to rise up and demand a real change, one that transcends empty words and materializes in concrete actions for the benefit of La Guajira and its people. And as the philosopher from La Junta said: I leave them there…
