and Moselle | The “Do you know” of the day. Do you know why dogs marked a district of Nancy?

It is a district on the outskirts of Nancy, where small pavilions and buildings of still reasonable size mix, between Boulevard d’Haussonville and Boulevard des Aiguillettes. At the end of World War II, we were still in the countryside.

Since the 17th century, this area has been called “la Chiennerie”. There was a farm in this area, where dogs were bred for the Dukes of Lorraine – hunting was a favorite activity for the aristocracy. A nearby “warren” made it possible to hunt rabbits: hence the name of another rue de Nancy, avenue de la Garenne.

The Ferme de la Chiennerie was located roughly at the western corner of rue Cardinal-Mathieu and rue Général-Leclerc, recalls the book “The streets of Nancy” by Paul and Dominique Robaux.

The neighborhood has sometimes had a bad reputation, without knowing if it was related to its name or to a social reality.

“Did you know that? Nancy” can also be listened to in podcast every day
