Ancient Tree Fossil Resembling Dr. Seuss Illustration Discovered in Canada
In a groundbreaking discovery, a team of researchers has unearthed a 350-million-year-old fossilized tree species in northeastern Canada that bears a striking resemblance to something out of a Dr. Seuss book. The fossil, known as Sanfordiacaulis densifolia, is one of the oldest-known trees ever found and provides valuable insights into the ancient vegetation that once covered our planet.
The fossilized tree was discovered in what used to be an ancient lake, where it would have thrived under the taller trees in the forest canopy. Dating back to the early Carboniferous period, these trees are just a few million years younger than the earliest known fossil trees from the late Devonian period. Interestingly, scientists are still unsure about the closest relatives of Sanfordiacaulis on the tree of life, making it an enigmatic taxa.
While Dr. Seuss’ Truffula trees may have been inspired by a cypress tree that died in 2019, these real-life ancient trees are even more otherworldly. A recent study published in Current Biology describes the intricate details of the ancient vegetation, from its leaves to its trunk, shedding light on its unique characteristics.
Lead author of the study, Robert Gastaldo, a paleontologist at Colby College, explains that each leaf of Sanfordiacaulis would have grown at least another meter before terminating. This means that the tree had an incredibly dense canopy of leaves that extended at least 18 feet around a non-woody trunk that was only half a foot in diameter. The sheer size and shape of the tree are truly startling.
The preservation of these ancient trees is a result of an earthquake that pushed foliage on the edge of a lake into the water, effectively pressing the trees into the lakebed. The recent paper focuses on the most complete of the five tree specimens found in the sandstone and siltstone of the ancient lake, which is now a quarry in New Brunswick.
The researchers concluded that Sanfordiacaulis optimized its growth by intercepting light from the surrounding greenery. The shape of the tree, with its immense canopy in proportion to its size, allowed it to host approximately 250 leaves around its trunk. Each leaf stretched nearly 6 feet out from the trunk, creating a stunning visual spectacle.
Dr. Gastaldo emphasizes the significance of these rare and unusual fossils, stating, “The history of life on land consists of plants and animals that are unlike any of those that live at the present. Evolutionary mechanisms operating in the deep past resulted in organisms that successfully lived over long periods of time, but their shapes, forms, growth architectures, and life histories undertook different trajectories and strategies. Rare and unusual fossils, such as the New Brunswick tree, is but one example of what colonized our planet but was an unsuccessful experiment.”
