Ancient Seal of 2,000 Years Old Gemstone Found in Jerusalem

JERUSALEM – Ancient seal of gemstone amethyst from the Second Temple period was found in Jerusalem. The 2,000-year-old seal was found in the bedrock foundation of Jerusalem’s West Wall.

Israel Antiquities Authority (IAA) archaeologist Eli Shukron said this discovery was very important and valuable because the seal was made of gemstones.

Quoted from SCI News, this tiny artifact has holes for attaching metal wires that allow it to be worn as a ring.

“Stamps are used to sign documents and can also be as jewelery as rings,” the researchers said.

Segel The gemstone is about 1 cm long and 0.5 cm wide. The seal is engraved with a dove perched on a branch of a fruiting tree.

“The plant engraved in the rock is probably the persimmon plant mentioned in the Bible, Talmud, and historical sources,” the scientists said.

During the Second Temple period, the plant was used as one of the most expensive ingredients to produce incense, perfumes, medicines, and ointments.

“This is an important discovery because this is probably the first time a seal has been found with carvings of a valuable and famous plant, which until now we could only read about in historical descriptions,” said Dr. Shukron.

Shukron says, segel this impressive gives a glimpse into the daily lives of the people living in the days of the Second Temple.
