A drug used to treat gout has the potential to reduce COVID-19 mortality by 50%, according to a new study cited by the Daily Mail.
Colchicum is a plant-derived medicine that was first used by the ancient Greeks because of its special healing properties.
It began to be widely used around the first century AD. for the treatment of gout and other inflammations and is one of the few drugs still used today. This was stated by experts from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem.
Four studies involving 6,000 patients with coronavirus examined the effects of the drug, each showing “clear benefits” from its use.
Israeli experts analyzed the studies, finding “a significant improvement in severe coronavirus cases and, most importantly, a reduction in mortality of about 50% compared to those not treated with colchicum.”
The discovery is important because the drug is cheap and requires a dose of half a milligram a day, according to researchers.
