Tiffany Slater, lead author of the study and postdoctoral researcher in paleobiology at University College Cork in Ireland, points out, “This same beta protein is also present in the feathers of modern birds.”
This discovery was very surprising because previously scientists believed that ancient animal fur had a very different protein composition, especially alpha protein which was not as strong as CBPs. However, this new research reveals that not only did ancient feathers consist of CBPs, but these CBPs turned into alpha-protein during the fossilization process.
