What is Anchorage Plaza?
Anchorage Plaza, does that remind you of something ? It’s a safe bet that no, and that’s quite legitimate. This is a sector located le long de Old Fulton Streetunder the Brooklyn Bridge. This space of more than 30,000m2 is abandoned for over 15 years. Since 2009, it has been used by the New York City Department of Transportation to store vehicles and construction equipment. If you’ve ever passed by, it’s clear that the place is not a dream. In line with the equipment and redevelopment of the numerous piers of Brooklyn Bridge Park, the New York authorities have therefore decided to look into this plot of land.

Where is Anchorage Plaza located?
When you walk across the Brooklyn Bridge from Manhattan, you arrive on Washington Street. It is at the end of this street that the legendary photo is located with the Manhattan Bridge in the background.
Anchorage Plaza is right next to the bridge exit, with its main part facing Old Fulton Street on the other side. You can’t miss this place when you go down Washington Street, there are fences and lots of barbed wire on your left.

Anchorage Plaza, many projects for years
According to local associations, the site has been the subject of several development projects. But this is really the first time that this seems to be coming to fruition. In particular, there were projects to make it an artistic place with an open-air art gallery. Also an amphitheater for live performances. We even thought about creating a sort of botanical garden there with a farmers market. There was talk of making it a play area for nearby schools, including summer and weekend camps. In total no less than 7 projects were proposed.

Which project will be selected?
It’s actually a bit of a mix of all that. the project which seems to have been selected by the parks and recreation department of the city of New York is that of a sports and recreational center. There should therefore be the construction of Padel courts, a sports course for dogs. There will also be space for performances and public art. There is also mention of concessions for the presence of food trucks or other catering spaces. Without a doubt, between Brooklyn Bridge Park, Empire Stores, Washington Street, etc. Anchorage Plaza will reinforce the attractiveness of this neighborhood of Brooklyn.
