Ancestors’ Population Decline: Study Reveals Shocking Statistics and Genetic Impact

The research suggests that our ancestors’ population declined dramatically between 800,000 and 900,000 years ago. The population fell to just 1,280 individuals that reproduced. Their numbers remained so low for a whopping 117,000 years.

“About 98.7 percent of human ancestors had disappeared,” says geneticist Haipeng Li of the University of the Chinese Academy of Sciences in Beijing, who co-led the study.
