The play is about the Fall of Rome, the downfall of the Roman Empire in the fight against the “barbarians”. Heiner Müller particularly emphasizes the North-South conflict suggested by Shakespeare and examines the anatomy of Shakespeare’s model. In Müller, as in Shakespeare, the focus is on the clash between the center of power and the periphery, between “civilization” and “barbarism” – with the clou that the question arises from the outset as to who represents what here. Because the victorious General Titus of civilized Rome is presented as a pitiless murderer in the first scene.
Maya Zbib, co-founder of Zoukak Theater in Beirut, previously directed A Memory for Oblivion (2013/14) at the community theater. From her special perspective, she interprets Anatomy Titus Fall of Rome with the local cast, a play “about a system that eats its children,” as she says.
