The film “Anatomy of a Fall” received the Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival. A film shot near Grenoble, in Isère and Savoie. A film that will ensure big financial benefits for producers. Among them, there is “Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes Cinéma”, a structure which helps around fifteen films a year. It is, for her, the first Palme d’Or.
And the palme d’or is awarded to… “Anatomy of a fall”. Directed by Justine Triet. It was shot in March and April 2022 in Savoy in the Maurienne Valley and in Isère.
A choice that owes nothing to chance. The director had already come to the region for a previous film (“Sybil” in 2019). A choice that can also be explained by a particularity: Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes Cinema.
This structure serves as a co-production fund to help and support authors and producers. We are not talking about subsidies, but about investment. 15 to 20 films are thus co-produced each year. With one imperative: to be filmed in the region. 3 million euros are invested in feature films. For “Anatomy of a fall”, 270,000 euros were put on the table. According to the director, Grégory Faes, the filming would have brought in 700,000 euros in direct expenses in the region (hotels, technicians, various filming costs, etc.).
But, in the case of a palme d’or (a first for the structure), the film will bring in even more thanks to the supreme reward. Because, Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes Cinéma, as a co-producer, will be able to recover part of the revenue generated by the film.
It is the result of long years of support for creation. Our editorial line is very open. We go to all genres and all over the region.
Grégory Faes, director of Auvergne Rhône Alpes Cinema
A good year for the region. César for best film for “La nuit du 12”, shot in Savoie and Isère. Palme d’or for “Anatomy of a fall”. The director remains modest, even if he recognizes that “it’s the ultimate reward, but it only happens once“.
The Auvergne Rhône Alpes region attracts many filmmakers. The diversity of landscapes also explains this success. From metropolises with very urban atmospheres to the mountains and the countryside, the region offers multiple settings. Sets and infrastructures well present in the territories (studios in Villeurbanne, animation studios in Valence, and hundreds of technicians).
The Maurienne valley was the ideal place to tell about the claustrophobia side of the film. It was the most interesting scenery with this so violent and so cold light from the mountain
Justine Triet, director of the film “Anatomy of a fall”
After the success in Cannes, projects in the Auvergne Rhône Alpes region follow one another.
After “Asterix and the Middle Kingdom” (4.5 million admissions) or “On the Black Paths (1 million admissions) this year, other filming is underway. Films therefore, short films also and, more recently, series.A budget of 2 million euros is devoted to audio-visual creation, a sector which also brings in a lot of money.
