Anastasia Vasilenko: Learning Latvian and Embracing the Culture

Anastasia Vasilenko says that she really likes Latvia and its people. A year ago, she started learning Latvian at the A1 level, but now she is learning the B1 level, which is more difficult, because she learns not only simple conversational language, but also literary expressions.

She learns the Latvian language “online” from a teacher in Daugavpils, talking with her friends in Engure, and, of course, listening to Latvian songs. Most of all, she likes Don, “Brainstorm”, Aminata, and without a doubt the group “SubScriptum” with whom she performs now. After thinking a little, she decides that she actually likes all Latvian artists.

A year ago, when she got on stage, she could only say “Good evening everyone, have a nice evening”. In the past, she sang Latvian songs, simply learning the words without thinking about their content. But now, when she sings in Latvian, she thinks along about what she sings, about the content. It’s heartfelt, says Anastasia Vasilenko.

Knowing the Latvian language, he feels better in his company. The most difficult in the Latvian language seem to be the length signs, but she says confidently: “If I live in Latvia, I need to know the Latvian language”. And out of respect for the people of Latvia, she does not want to speak Russian.

It must be said that the Russian language was common until Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, but now all the singers in her homeland want to speak Ukrainian: “All of us in Ukraine now need to know Ukrainian. It is our language!”

How Anastasia Vasilenko evaluates her path to the Latvian language and its necessity, watch the Jauns.lv video.

The project is financed by the Media Support Fund from the funds of the Latvian state budget. SIA Izdevniecība “Rīgas Vilņi” is responsible for the content of “Mūsējie”.
