Anastasia Bodnaruk Crowned World Rapid Chess Champion in Samarkand; Russian Dominance in Top Ten Rankings

The World Rapid Chess Championship took place in Samarkand.

Anastasia Bodnaruk beat Indian representative Humpy Koneru in a tiebreaker with a score of 2.5:1.5. Chinese Lei Tingjie took third place.

At the end of 11 rounds, Bodnaruk, Koneru and Lei Tingjie scored 8.5 points each. Thanks to the best additional indicators, Bodnaruk and Koneru received the right to play in the tiebreaker.

Four Russians entered the top ten – Valentina Gunina, who took 7th place (8 points), Ekaterina Lagno became 8th, Alexandra Goryachkina – 9th, Leya Garifullina – 10th (all – 7.5 points).

For the second time in history, a representative of Russia became the world champion in rapid. Prior to this, Alexandra Kosteniuk won in 2021, who has been competing for Switzerland since this year.

Bodnaruk is 31 years old. She is the Russian champion in rapid 2023 and blitz in 2019, and the winner of the European team championship as a member of the Russian women’s team in 2015.

On December 29-30, the World Blitz Championship will be held in Samarkand.
