The sick Anas Jaber defeated Czech Marie Bouzkova 5-7 7-6 6-3, so that the Tunisian player kept her hopes for the US Open tennis championship by reaching the fourth round, despite the many mistakes, last night.
Fifth seed Anas Jabeur said she felt like a “living dead” because of the illness, but recovered to defeat a cold-blooded Bouzkova, who hit 56 winners at Arthur Ashe Stadium.
In the round of 16, she will face China’s Cheng Qinwen, who defeated Italy’s Lucia Bronzetti 6-3, 4-6, 6-4.
Last year’s runner-up said, “It was a very difficult match for us. She didn’t want to stop and tried to do her best against a great player.”
Anas is known in her country as the “Minister of Happiness”, but she did not smile during the first set, as she paid the price for mistakes and Bouzkova broke her serve in the fifth attempt in the fourth game.
The Tunisian broke back with a beautiful backhand in the ninth game, but allowed Bouzkova to break again with a double fault on set point.
Bouzkova was treated off court after the seventh game in the second set and appeared to be suffering from a leg injury, but she continued to fight, limping while walking around the court, and still broke serve in the tenth game.
Anas found hope in the tie-break and converted her forehand winner into the third set.
And she broke a pivotal serve in the sixth game, when Bouzkova double-faulted and settled the match after nearly three hours when the Czech player hit the net.
The Wimbledon runner-up said she struggled to catch her breath early in the match but was grateful to continue playing after a foot injury in Cincinnati.
“Every match is an additional reward for me now,” she told ESPN. “I discover a new part of myself.”
Anas expects a great challenge for Cheng, saying, “She has strong forehands and it will definitely be a difficult confrontation.”
