A self-proclaimed anarcho-capitalist who wants to destroy the traditional “caste system” of politics – this is the future president of Argentina, Javier Millay, whose main pre-election slogan could be translated as “let them all go beck”.
The second round of Argentina’s presidential election took place last Sunday, in which the “political earthquake”, the candidate of the Freedom Forward! party alliance, Javier Millay of the Libertarian Party, won with about 55% of the vote. In August, he surprised the public by beating both of Argentina’s largest traditional political forces, and Sunday’s victory over left-wing candidate Sergio Massa by 11 percentage points was an unexpected triumph. However, this victory can also be seen as the result of a protest vote – Argentines living in the midst of a prolonged economic crisis express that they have nothing left to lose.
“We have fallen from the richest country in the world to 130th place. Half of Argentines are poor and another 10% have no means of livelihood at all,” Milley emphasized in his victory speech: “The caste system that increases poverty must be stopped. Now we will adopt the libertarian model to come back as a world power.”
