In the United States, where vaccination for the novel coronavirus infection (Corona 19) was started, 21 cases of anaphylaxis were reported as an adverse reaction. This is the result of an analysis of 1,893,360 people who received the first dose of the mRNA vaccine developed by Pfizer in the US and BioNTech in Germany.

On the 21st (local time), Dr. Tom Shimabukuro, head of the vaccine safety team at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), published a report containing such information in the international academic journal JAMA (Journal of the American Medical Association). Reports of suspected anaphylaxis or allergic reactions after vaccination are made voluntarily to the Vaccine Adverse Event Reporting System (VAERS), a vaccine adverse reaction reporting system.

CDC analyzed the cases reported to VAERS out of the 1.893,360 people who received the first dose of Pfizer’s Corona 19 vaccine from December 14 to 23 last year. As a result, 21 people showed symptoms of anaphylaxis after vaccination with the Corona 19 vaccine. No deaths from anaphylaxis have been reported.

It took an average of 13 minutes to develop symptoms after vaccination, and 15 out of 21 patients (71%) occurred within 15 minutes. The most common symptoms were hives, angioedema, rash, and throat obstruction.

Of the 21 people who had an anaphylaxis reaction, 81% or 17 had a history of allergies due to drugs, food, or insect stings. Seven people, 33%, experienced hypersensitivity after vaccinating influenza vaccines.

There were 83 cases of allergic reactions such as itching, rash, and mild respiratory symptoms after vaccination with the Corona 19 vaccine.

The CDC recommended that the presence of epinephrine capable of responding to anaphylaxis should be checked when vaccinated against mRNA Corona 19. In addition, according to the history of allergic reactions, the inoculators should be observed 15 to 30 minutes after vaccination.

“Clinicians need to be careful in recognizing and reporting adverse vaccine reactions,” the researchers said. Clinicians play an important role in monitoring vaccine safety.”
