Analyzing the Success and Shortcomings of ‘Fireworks in My World’: A Firefighter-Themed Romance Drama Starring Yang Yang and Wang Churan

Yang Yang plays a firefighter, and his partner Wang Churan’s “Fireworks in My World” has just finished broadcasting.

Firefighter-themed film and television dramas have really blown out in the past two years. Previously, “Illuminate You” by William Chan and Ruonan Zhang just started airing in June, and “He Came from the Light of Fire” by Huang Jingyu and Zhang Jingyi was also announced to be finished soon. Two years earlier, Ren Jialun and Gong Jun also acted as firefighters. Among them, Gong Jun’s “Hello, Flame Blue”, the male and female protagonists are the same as “My Fireworks in the World”, and they are both firefighters and doctors.

It can be seen that young male actors are really eager to transform into “tough guys”. Unfortunately, there are not many examples of successful internal entertainment of this type of workplace romance drama. “Fireworks in My World” has been broadcast so far. Yang Yang’s appearance is indeed good, and the match with Wang Churan is also pleasing to the eye, but he wants to show his professionalism and love, and he wants to play the card of realism but can’t get rid of the background of idol dramas.

1 From a bad meal,

Highlight the particularity of the work of the male and female protagonists

The director and screenwriter put their heart into it

Since it is a “workplace romance drama”, let’s talk about the “career” part first.

The opening chapter of “Fireworks in My World” starts with the meal of the two protagonists.

Song Yan, played by Yang Yang, is the head of a fire station in a certain city. When they appeared on the scene, the firefighters were making dumplings. Just when everyone thought that nothing happened today and they could have a hot meal, the alarm bell rang, and everyone had to drop the skin they were rolling, put on their rescue suits and rush out.

Over there, the surgeon Xu Qin (played by Wang Churan) performed a few hours of surgery, and after the end of the operation, the whole walk was unstable. Back at the office, I was finally able to have a bite of the takeaway that I had ordered earlier, and a clip, because the vermicelli was broken early because it was left for too long, and I had to watch the patient’s film while eating.

From such an opening, it can be seen that the director and screenwriter have put their heart into it. The unpalatable meal highlights the special work of firefighters and surgeons.

In “Fireworks in My World”, there are many plots similar to reflecting reality. These events that happened in the news or at the moment make this emotional drama different from some past dramas that love each other and sprinkle industrial sugar. For example, after Song Yan, Xu Qin and others participated in the rescue of a car accident, the injured concealed their illness, which put all the medical staff and rescuers in danger of contracting infectious diseases; another example, after the rescue of a car accident where a bus overturned, someone reported that the male passenger who heroically rescued people in the car accident was actually a “scumbag” who cheated many girls of their emotions and property; care about…

It can be said that “Fireworks in My World” takes a lot of space to show the professional characteristics of the two protagonists. Each episode has a plot of firefighters going to the police, ranging from rescue in various extreme situations to small training subjects such as cross-country with heavy loads, running, and climbing hooks and ladders. And the heroine’s practice of medicine can be considered to stand up to scrutiny.

But therein lies the problem.

2 professions are just for decoration

It’s nothing more than letting the two of them take advantage of their professions to forcefully join the line, and continue to spark love

“Fireworks in My World” is adapted from Jiu Yuexi’s novel “A City, Waiting for You”. The original work is a typical Jinjiang romance novel.

After being adapted into a TV series, although many realistic plots have been added, the background has determined that it cannot become a realistic work like the high-scoring drama “Tears of Vulcan” that described the daily life of firefighters two years ago.

In “Tears of the Vulcan”, the creator, by showing the daily working conditions of today’s grassroots firefighters in Taiwan, arouses the public’s attention to the living conditions of people who are related to social security and stability, and then thinks about the deep meaning of the act of saving lives.

For example, in the play, after receiving the alarm, the firefighters broke down the anti-theft door to enter, but found that it was a false alarm. Afterwards, the fire brigade received a complaint, and the homeowner found the firefighters to claim compensation. The superiors were unwilling to take responsibility, and the firefighters were forced to take the blame. The police were sent out again, with the lessons from last time and the new management regulations, the firefighters did not break the demolition in the end, but the result was that people committed suicide in the house. Missing the rescue brought another chain reaction: the guilt of the firefighters, the condemnation of public opinion… The interaction between grassroots firefighters, upper-level firefighting managers, government officials, ordinary people, and media practitioners due to rescue revealed the various disadvantages and irrationality in Taiwan’s current firefighting and rescue work.

In contrast, the refraction of reality in “My Fireworks on Earth” is more of a mishmash of some current hot issues, without further discussion on this.

From the perspective of the story structure, the occupations in “Fireworks in My World” are always embellished. The protagonist’s occupation and emotions are in a state of separation. Whether the characters are firefighters or doctors, they have no effect on their emotions. If you take the emotional part separately, it will not be much worse than it is now.

As for the encounters in various work scenes deliberately created to advance the relationship line: the male protagonist goes to rescue, and the female protagonist who is resting at home also comes to rescue people with a medicine box; the city is raining heavily, and the male protagonist is on the rescue road, and happens to meet the female protagonist who is trapped in the car; To put it bluntly, it was to force the two to merge due to professional reasons, and then the collision sparked again.

3 Yang Yang and Wang Churan

Handling of characters is archaic

Both of them have not stepped out of the past performance mode,

You are handsome, you are beautiful, but you can’t feel emotions

If there is still some progress in the portrayal of the workplace part, there is nothing new in the love part.

Yang Yang and Wang Churan are of course a good-looking pair in terms of appearance alone. As soon as Yang Yang appears on the stage, the screen is full of bullet screens that are “so handsome”. In the play, whether it is the firefighters at the fire station, or Song Yan’s sister, nurses, etc., they all praise Song Yan’s appearance.

In the play, a lot of pictures and plots are used to show Song Yan’s handsomeness – not only his face, but also his explosive fighting power and style like a lone wolf.

Like the opening chapter, Song Yan demonstrates “impossible tasks” to newcomers. The first thing to shoot is him handsomely “slapping” a sandbag on his leg. The implication is: I, Song Yan, have to increase the difficulty to complete the task that the newbie thinks is impossible. This group of shots is also more elegant: first, it is an overhead shot to see how Song Yan quickly climbs up from the outer wall with a ladder. The plot of just over one minute is presented from multiple angles, such as side, front, and back.

After completing the task, he turned his head in disdain, and after reprimanding the newcomers, Song Yan walked again in the afterglow of the setting sun.

There are countless similar examples. For example, Song Yan searched and rescued in the old building. After the instructor clearly told him to stop, he rushed in like a lone wolf; Song Yan and Xu Qin encountered a fire while eating, and Song Yan rushed up to evacuate the crowd.

There is nothing wrong with filming these scenes that show personal superpowers, but filming too much will inevitably make the audience feel tired and unbelievable. For example, if a fire broke out in a shopping mall, with so many people present, only Song Yan and Xu Qin knew how to put out the fire and save lives? This obviously does not stand up to scrutiny.

On the other hand, for the sake of broadcasting, the settings of the male and female protagonists in the play have also been edited a lot compared with the original work. After removing those content with a certain grayscale, the characters become almost perfect. Song Yan, cold on the outside and warm on the inside, is upright and kind, has super fighting power, always at the forefront, and the key is to be handsome! Xu Qin, who is also cold on the outside and warm on the inside, has a kind and pure heart. He graduated from a foreign university with a medical major and has superb medical skills.

Of course handsome men and women can be beautiful, but the drama is still obsessed with creating characters with excellent morality, intelligence, physique, art and labor. It is easy to become the paper people in Mary Su’s novels, which makes people feel empty.

In terms of performance, Yang Yang and Wang Churan’s handling of the characters is also old-fashioned. This staleness mainly means that the two of them have not stepped out of the previous performance mode. They are handsome and beautiful, but they can’t feel emotions.

Yang Yang, for example, always tilts his head, purses his lips, and frowns in a three-piece suit, and his whole body is too tense. As for Wang Churan, the whole person is in a daze, and any emotion in front of her is like a fist hitting the cotton, and there is always a hazy feeling that the outline cannot be seen clearly through the tulle.

There are many scenes of two people looking at each other in the play, but the audience can’t see any emotion from the looking at each other. They can only rely on the camera to zoom in and out to create emotions.

In the play, the two reunited for the first time in the hospital. They used to love each other but had no choice but to separate. They reunited after many years. There was no surprise, grievance or other emotions in the eyes of the two. On Yang Yang’s side, it’s “am I the most handsome” who sees through everything, while Wang Churan is the innocent Kazilan with big eyes.

To sum up, “Fireworks in My World” is said to be an idol drama, and there are many reflections of realism; but it is obviously not a realistic drama in the true sense. It is a typical old-fashioned story of a campus couple, a wealthy family, a rich daughter and a poor boy being beaten with a mandarin duck. As a result, the audience seems to be watching two different dramas at the same time.

To put it nicely, creators know the market too well. To put it bluntly, creators know how to please the audience too much: the platform knows how to use big data to create scripts and select actors, and creators know how to write the protagonist more powerfully and shoot more handsomely in the moment of “looking at the face” to make fans happy.

It’s better to be honest and think about how to make a good story.
