Analyzing the Statistics: VfL Bochum’s Lacking Goal Conversion and Passing Accuracy

The statistics of the still young season show what is still lacking at VfL Bochum. In addition to the mileage, Thomas Letsch’s team is also behind when it comes to passing.

The international break offers the opportunity to take a closer look at the start of the season. After the 0:5 swatter at the start against VfB Stuttgart, VfL Bochum collected the first points of the young season against Borussia Dortmund (1:1) and FC Augsburg (2:2).

Even if numbers are not everything, a look at the statistics provides possible reasons why Thomas Letsch’s team has not yet been able to win – because there were definitely chances.

VfL shot at goal a total of 45 times in the first three games and thus occupies eighth place in the league-wide ranking (data via bundesliga.com). However, only three of these attempts ended up online. For comparison: Stuttgart, who gave VfL five goals on the first day of the game and scored a total of eleven times (best value with Leverkusen), only completed 41 times.

Worst pass rate, second worst mileage

However, it is not just in front of the goal that there is a lack of precision. VfL also shows deficits in the passing game. Only 75.9 percent of the passes brought Bochum to the man – the worst value in the entire league, behind 1. FSV Mainz 05 (76.5 percent).

In terms of mileage, there is still a lot of catching up to do. The Letsch team covered 336.3 kilometers in the first three games. Only promoted SV Darmstadt 98, who is still pointless at the end of the table, ran less (333.8 kilometers).

But there are also numbers that should be emphasized positively. Ivan Ordets in particular stands out: The Ukrainian has won the most header duels in the league so far (24). In terms of duels won (43), only one teammate beats him. New signing Bernardo has already won 44 times.

As a team, Bochum, with 290 duels won in this category, are only beaten by Mainz (332), Bremen (323), Dortmund (300) and Cologne (292). In the header duels they won, they took fourth place (77) behind Mainz (98), Bremen (95) and Freiburg (78).

Before the Bundesliga continues, Letsch and his team have until Saturday, September 16 (6:30 p.m.) to work on the supposed weak points. Then Eintracht Frankfurt is a guest. Before that, VfL is still testing against VV ST. Truiden (Thursday, September 7, 2 p.m.).
