The study data was obtained from the government database FARS (US Fatality Analysis Reporting System), maintained by the NHTSA agency of the US Department of Transportation (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration).
The sample included accidents that occurred between 2017 and 2022 involving modern vehicles (2018-2022 model years) that resulted in the death of the driver or passengers. On average, the probability of a fatal accident with such openings was 2.8 per billion vehicle kilometers.
However, the Tesla brand had the highest rate of fatal accidents in the country: 5.6 per billion vehicle kilometers – just double the average. In second place in the anti-rating was the Kia brand with a mark of 5.5, Buick – in third place with a noticeable margin (4.8).
There is also a more detailed breakdown – by model. The small crossover Hyundai Venue has the highest number of fatal accidents: 13.9 fatal accidents per billion vehicle kilometers. Also in the top 10 cars with the most deaths are: Chevrolet Corvette (13.6), Mitsubishi Mirage (13.6), Porsche 911 (13.2), Honda CR-V Hybrid (13.2), Tesla Model Y (10.6), Mitsubishi Mirage G4 (10.1), Buick Encore GX (9.8), Kia Forte (8.1), Buick Envision (8.0).
The reasons for most models being included in this sad level are clear. The Hyundai Venue, Mitsubishi Mirage and Buick Encore GX are small, inexpensive cars that are particularly vulnerable to crashes with the large SUVs and pickup trucks that are popular in the United States. The Chevrolet Corvette and Porsche 911, on the other hand, are powerful and fast supercars: most drivers simply do not perform to their potential.
