Analyst Ming-Chi Kuo Refutes Rumors of TSMC Absorbing Apple’s Chip Defect Costs

Tianfeng International Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo pointed out on Wednesday (9th) that Apple and TSMC have recently reached an agreement to absorb “defective chips”, which is different from his understanding.

Previously, foreign media reported that TSMC and Apple have reached an agreement. When producing custom chips for Apple, TSMC will absorb the costs related to defective products in the new process. It is predicted that this agreement may save Apple iPhone, iPad and Mac chips. cost billions of dollars.

However, Ming-Chi Kuo tweeted: “Recent media reports that TSMC does not ask Apple to pay the cost of 3nm defective products, which is different from my understanding.”

According to Ming-Chi Kuo, there are generally two transaction methods for customers to purchase chips from TSMC, namely finished goods buy and wafer buy.

He mentioned that most of the procurement methods are wafer procurement, becauseTSMC’s yield rate is good enough to ignore the cost of defective products, but Apple is a very special case

He further explained that Apple has always asked TSMC to provide the world’s latest advanced process production services. Because the latest advanced process has many defective products in the early stage of production, Apple has always purchased finished products. And TSMC will also allocate most of the cost of defective products to the price of each finished product. The best proof is that the cost of new processors used in new iPhones has increased significantly every year, and this year’s A17 is no exception.
